The fine print, in plain words
About, sources and legal
This project would not be possible without the NSW Government's Restore Trees NSW app and the NSW State Vegetation Type Map. I built Plant What Belongs to help connect people with local nurseries, so that more of that knowledge turns into native plants in the ground.
Not affiliated
Plant What Belongs is an independent project. It is not run by, endorsed by, sponsored by or affiliated with the NSW Government, the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, the Restore Trees NSW app, Landcare, National Parks, or any nursery, seed supplier or group listed here. Names are used only to say where information comes from or where to find a grower. We are just hoping to facilitate some rewilding.

- Plant information. The "About this plant" links go to PlantNET (NSW FloraOnline), which belongs to the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust. We link to it and do not copy its content.
- Bush foods. The "Edible" tags are our own short notes, based on the NSW National Parks story Bush tucker on the menu and the Sydney Wildflower Nursery edible native plants list. Many bush foods come from Aboriginal knowledge held over tens of thousands of years. Some need preparing, and you must be sure of a plant before you eat it.
- Maps and addresses. Map tiles and address search use data from OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL). The map is drawn with Leaflet (BSD 2-Clause).
- Statistics. The clearing figure is from the NSW Government's 2023 vegetation clearing report. The figure on species at risk is from the NSW State of the Environment report, as reported by AAP. The canopy growth figure is from the University of Sydney (Pakizeh, Naderpajouh and Johnson, Cities, 2026). The hot days figures are from Pfautsch, Wujeska-Klause and Walters (Western Sydney University, Weather and Climate Extremes, 2025). The woodland bird finding is from Bennett and colleagues (Journal of Applied Ecology, 2022), a Victorian study. The garden escapes figure is from Groves, Boden and Lonsdale (CSIRO, for WWF-Australia, 2005). The Landcare figures are from a Landcare Australia survey. Each is linked on the page.
- Nursery listings. Gathered from public websites and directories, then checked by hand. They can be out of date.
What we changed. The vegetation maps are queried live and we show the class names they return. Species lists are summarised from BioNet plant community type data: we rank species by how often they occur in each vegetation class and show the most common ones. These are our summaries, not official lists, and the original data is the authority.
Please read before you plant
- General information only. Nothing here is legal, environmental, horticultural or professional advice. Check with your council, Local Land Services or a qualified person.
- The maps are a guide. The NSW vegetation maps say themselves that they are a guide only and contain errors and gaps. What is mapped, or what once grew, at your address may differ from what is really there. An address result describes the area around a spot, and a postcode result describes a whole postcode.
- You are responsible for where you plant. Plant only on land you own or have permission to use. Planting on public land, nature strips, reserves or someone else's property without permission may be against the law or council rules. Rules differ between councils.
- Choose with care. Check that a plant is right for your soil, light and space, and that it is not a regulated weed in your area. Do not collect seed or plants from bushland.
- Nurseries and groups. We do not sell plants, take orders or vouch for any grower. Dealings are between you and them. Check prices, stock and opening hours with them first, and ask where their seed came from.
- No warranty. The site is provided as is, and may be wrong, change or go offline. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss or damage from using it. Nothing here limits rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law.
- Links. We link to other sites we do not control.
Privacy
- Addresses. An address you type is sent to our server and to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service to find its map point, then to NSW government map services as a location. We do not store it. Our web host may keep standard server logs.
- What we keep. The postcode, plant list and quantities when you copy your plant list, with no name or contact details. Planting reports (a postcode, a count and an optional plant list), which appear on the map as a postcode area, never a street.
- Nurseries. Details sent through the listing form, including an email address, are private and only used to review and contact you. An email is shown publicly only if you tick the box.
- Cookies and tracking. The public pages set no cookies and have no ads or analytics. Fonts are served from this site, so no font provider sees your visit.
- Changes and removal. To change a listing, take a nursery down or remove a planting report, email plantwhatbelongs@gmail.com and say what you want changed. We will act on takedown requests promptly. You can also use the listing form.
